light contrast

Well, I have talked about the quality of light as being hard and soft, but what about light contrast? You will learn more about light contrast in the chapter on metering and measuring light but for right now a simple definition will do. Light contrast is the difference in light intensity between the highlight and shadows. The more difference in brightness between the highlights and shadows the greater the contrast. The less difference in brightness between the highlights and shadows the lower the contrast. The difference between the highlight and shadow is expressed as a light ratio. You will have a greater understanding of this when you learn about measuring light in the next chapter. Before you go on to measuring light you need to learn about another concept; light fall off or technically known as the, "Inverse Square Law."
